Does CBD Oil Get You High?

does cbd oil make you high

With so much press being given to CBD, it’s understandable that individuals are asking basic questions of the cannabinoid. One of the questions we hear often is, “Does CBD Oil get you high?” In this article, we’ll dive into CBD and talk about its effects on a user’s body and brain. With that information, we will be able to determine if Cannabidiol gets you high.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol, a substance that is native to both the hemp and marijuana plants. CBD is the second most available “cannabinoid” behind THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol. What are cannabinoids, you ask?

Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds located within cannabis plants (Marijuana and Hemp). Cannabinoids mimic compounds our bodies naturally produce, called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids pair with particular receptors within the body's Endocannabinoid System (ECS) to help regulate many aspects of health and homeostasis.

It is important to know that CBD doesn’t directly pair with receptors CB1 and CB2, which will help us understand whether or not CBD Oil will make you high.

What is CBD Oil?

It’s important to make the distinction between CBD and CBD Oil. CBD is the cannabinoid extracted from the plant and CBD Oil, sometimes called CBD Tincture, is the product made with CBD as an ingredient. Before CBD is available as a product, it first has to go through an extraction process. There are a variety of extraction processes, including C02 extraction, olive oil extraction, and solvent extraction.

CBD Oils are generally contained in tincture-type bottles with droppers. Most tinctures will contain around 2oz of CBD Oil and range from 100 mg to 5000 mg of CBD per bottle. Tinctures are recommended to be taken sublingually, or under the tongue. If you do take a dropper of CBD Oil, it is important to keep the oil under your tongue for around 60 seconds or so, so the oil can seep into the mucus membranes and filter into the bloodstream.

There are no exact intake guidelines for taking CBD Oil. We can only recommend that users start out using small servings (around 5mg) and increase their intake until a suitable amount is found. There are a variety of factors which include weight, gender and age that make it impossible to have a one-size-fits-all serving size.

What Does “High” Mean?

Let’s pretend for a second that you have never been “high” before. So when asking the question, “Does CBD Oil get you high?,” it’s important to know what we’re talking about.

When one gets “high,” they are referring to the psychoactive changes in mental, perceptual and physical states they feel when they ingest THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). These “altered” states are usually characterized by some of the following signs:

  • A feeling of spaciness
  • Body relaxation
  • Warped perception of time
  • A sense of euphoria
  • Drowsiness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Heightened sensory awareness

These effects typically last anywhere from one to six hours depending on the amount of THC and how it was consumed.

Does CBD Hemp Oil Get You High?

Now, we can begin to answer if CBD Oil produces the effects of “feeling high.” Or, does CBD Oil change my mental, perceptual, and physical states like THC does?

The short answer is, no, CBD Oil does not reproduce the “high” effects that THC does. But the more interesting question is, “Why doesn’t CBD Oil make me high?”

In order to answer that question, we have to revisit the receptors CB1 and CB2 that we discussed earlier in the article. Remember when we said that CBD doesn't bind with receptors CB1 and CB2 like THC? This is part of the reason that CBD does not give a THC-like high.

The CB1 receptor is known to regulate the release and uptake of calcium channels in dopamine-producing neurons, which tells neurons to release neurotransmitters or not. As you may know, dopamine is the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward.

When THC is consumed, it activates the brain’s reward system, similar to the way your brain is activated by sex or food. THC stimulates neurons in the reward system to release higher than average levels of dopamine, which helps contribute to the “high” feelings.

Not only this, but THC closely resembles the endocannabinoid anandamide. Whenever THC enters the body, it pairs with the CB1 receptors much like anandamide does. When THC connects with the CB1 receptors, it produces the “blissful” feelings that anandamide does, like a magnified runner’s high.

Coming full circle, we know that CBD does not pair with the receptors CB1 and CB2 like THC does. Because CBD Oil will not pair with those receptors, the “high” feelings triggered by your brain’s reward system are not experienced.

In fact, CBD might even have a dulling effect on the THC “high,” lowering the anxiety and paranoia that can sometimes be experienced in that state.

Does Vaping CBD Oil Get You High?

Traditionally you vape CBD e-liquid or CBD vape juice, not CBD Oil. This is because CBD Oil is specially formulated to be taken under the tongue, not smoked. CBD Oil is not the right consistency to be used with a vape pen, vape, or box mod. Therefore it could ruin your device.

Back to the question at hand, whether vaping E-liquid or CBD Oil, you will not get high. CBD is not psychoactive and therefore, its use does not result in a high. However, you may notice feeling more relaxed or calm when you vaping CBD.
